The banded factorization \(PA = LU\).

LU holds both factors in band storage: \(U\), with the fill pivoting adds, in the rows above the diagonal row, and the multipliers of \(L\) below it. \(L\) has a unit diagonal, which is not stored. Step k exchanged rows k and swaps[k].
